This one was painted in response to the January Challenge from the DPIAG Blog. The title of the challenge was "Reflections" - Entries will be posted on January 15th. This bad boy was done with acrylics on a highly textures canvas. I wish there was a good way to capture the 3D texture and depth of the various layers of color. Seems like I could benefit from photography classes!

Ok, so I'm Bad! This is a Black and White and One Color Challenge

so if you wondering why this is red and B&W it's because I simply

was too ill with surgeries to paint for the challenge this month so had

to post something from the past and this is all I had since I

paint in mostly brilliant colors. This is a small portion

of my Giant Sneakers painting that was so popular a couple of

years ago.

So now this brings me a thought for

OCTOBER 2011 CHALLENGE

Since this B&W Challenge is always so popular

the next challenge will be RED

You can use other colors with it

but the PRIMARY COLOR IS RED.

I manipulated a photograph of a lily using Photoshop to produce this abstract. I prepared some mount board by gluing strips of tissue paper all over it to give some texture, and then washed a layer of thin light blue acrylic over it before painting the resulting abstract.

This is a translation of music to color from a tuned set of primary colors from my book IF C IS RED. It is the first 8 measures of Chopin's Prelude XX. I chose the colors purely through the dictates of the music as explained in my book.

After much consideration I have decided that I will put The Tiger forward as my best painting. This painting is an oil measuring 24" x 18".It has been extremely hard to get an accurate photo of The Tiger and unfortunately a small photograph does not adequately reflect the true character of this painting and cannot adequately show the large size of the tiger's head.

I like in my paintings to give the impression that virtually every hair is painted, and yet if you look closely, you will see that this is far from the case. Although my paintings are very detailed I prefer to leave some work to the viewer as I find the 'every hair painted' paintings are a little uninteresting. I have endeavoured in The Tiger to take the viewer's eye round the tiger, with the dappling effect of light and shade, and yet keep bringing it back to the main focus of the hypnotic eye. There are several lost and found edges in this painting which I feel adds to the tension and interest - the painting manages to have a feeling of movement despite it being a static subject and its new owner feels you can see it breathing! I am pleased with the perception of depth I have given to the fur making it possible to imagine running your hands through it - if you felt brave enough! I find this a painting which you can view time and time again and not become bored with it and I will miss it as it is shortly off to its new home.

Here is my best painting ever. I consider it the best because I could stand and stare at it forever. I never tire of looking at it and I often marvel that I was able to paint such a great painting. If somebody else had painted it, I'd want to see more of their work and be envious that they could create work that pulled me in the way this one did. I love the colors and the shapes and the people. I know there's a story happening and probably more than one so this one really grabs my imagination and the colors soothe my soul. Sounds like I'm on a major ego trip, I know, but I'm not. I just love this painting.
